Why Six of My Books are #Free on #Kindle Until 7-8-16!

A few weeks ago I was feeling a little low because my life had gotten a bit out of control and I had too many things going on that required my complete attention. To be honest, this has been going on much longer than I cared to acknowledge but that’s how life goes.

I was in a slump. Unable to read or write much of anything and the only light I could see at the end of the tunnel was a train coming. Then it hit me; writer’s block combined with disappointment in my sales due to my lack of interest in my own life and happiness. Book reviews had tapered off. I’d become lax in my marketing and I couldn’t decide which direction I wanted to go.

I’d held on so tightly to all of my books for three years and feared without an agent and a major publishing company, I’d never sell enough books to achieve the level of success I need and want in order to finally quit my day job and write full time…my ultimate dream.

In the throws of all of this brain scramble, my original plan came roaring back to the surface like a wave crashing over me. My original dream while I was writing Fireflies was just to be read. I just wanted people to read my books and hopefully enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. It was never about getting rich quick (thank goodness right?) or overnight fame. At its core, this journey has been about sharing my work with the world and finding readers who’d want to join me on this voyage.

“Give them away.”

That was the voice I heard. Since I started giving them all away yesterday, I have already received some wonderful feedback from people who have started reading the books. As of this writing, I have given away a grand total of 6,444 books. I am not naive enough to believe that all of these downloads will be read and even fewer of those will be reviewed. However, had I not opened the gates and invited so far almost 6,500 people in to try out my books, my odds of ever reaching these people would have been near ZERO.

Here we are into day 2. We have until Friday midnight to reach as many readers as I can. I’d love it if you would assist me with either sharing this blog post anyway you can and/or downloading my books and hopefully, reading one of them. 🙂

Thanks so much for your time!

#Writers and/or #Authors, Is There Anything You Won’t Write About?

tied-hands

Recently this issue reared it’s ugly head. I say ugly head because I believe sometimes we need to get dirty in order to tell a story with as much truth as it deserves. Just to clarify, it wasn’t me who was concerned but a fellow writer. They prefer not to use profanity, or sex or other more sensitive topics and issues within their stories. I, on the other hand, tend to lean towards whatever the story requires in order to move it forward and well, whatever it takes…just tell the damn story.

  • Do you allow your personal feelings about these elements to keep you from pushing the boundaries in order to not violate some sacred or self imposed oath you’ve made?
  • Are you afraid of what Mary Jo at PTA will say when she sees the F word in your book?
  • Do you allow the judgments of others to hold you back from expressing yourself?
  • Are some subjects just too taboo for you to touch?
  • Would you use a different pen name if you had to in order to protect yourself out of fear that someone you know might raise an eyebrow?

There are all brands of writers. If you enjoy writing books that are cozy and comfortable, I applaud you. That’s your lane and you’re comfortable in it. This post isn’t about you. You’re fine doing what you love and most likely, your audience loves you for these sweet stories. This post is for those who hold back from pushing a readers buttons or fears some sort of backlash if they explore new subject matter or God forbid, a character does something bad.

Just to clarify again, I have authored two book series’ that couldn’t be more different. They are both Historical Fiction but one is a family saga / paranormal and the other is about the Golden Age of Piracy. One story explores love, relationships, spirituality and faith while the other delves into the dark, dank and seedy atmosphere of piracy, murder and every other awful thing you can imagine. I know deep down that I haven’t fully explored myself as a writer and in truth, I have no reservations about digging deeper and I already have a story on my imagination radar that will push my limits even further.

The point I’m making is there are plenty of wonderful, wholesome and clean books out there. My Fireflies series are two good examples of that. Although they explore relationships and adult subject matter, it is written as to how a family in a small town in 1800’s Pennsylvania would experience it. Then at the opposite end of the bookshelf, are my pirate tales. Violence, foul language, sexual situations, objectification of women, rape, murder, thievery and abuse are prevalent throughout. I’m not afraid of that. I’m not afraid when my characters are evil just as I’m not afraid when my characters are good. They reflect the era and environment in which they are written. I love Jack Sparrow but he’s about as much of a real pirate as I am.

I don’t believe what we write is any indication of our own personal moral compass. Writing is a journey in exploration of one’s imagination. Writing what we know is a proven myth, except when it comes to our characters. Just as Anne Rice has never personally interviewed nor experienced real vampires and Stephen King hasn’t encountered Giant, prehistoric insects or lived in an extra-terrestrial dome, we imagine these tales. What we hold onto throughout them are the players. People are people, whether they live in a galaxy far far away or in a world where by an unlucky draw from a fish bowl, they have to fight in a game for their lives to feed their families. Writing about pirates doesn’t make me one any more than killing off main characters book after book makes George R.R. Martin a murderer. However, that’s what makes being a writer the most wonderful and tantalizing craft!

AMBER WAKE – Gabriel Falling is now available for pre-order @ Amazon.com!

Amber Wake: Gabriel Falling by P.S. Bartlett and Ronovan Hester

Where do I begin?
That’s a difficult question in and of itself but when your life is transformed into something else, do you start when you’re born or when your life truly began?
I was born in London as Gabriel Wallace. The child of high society; although I was raised to appreciate
everything that softly landed in my hand. I followed all the rules. I worked hard, studied hard and ended up a captain in the Royal Navy before my twenty fifth birthday. Unfortunately, I saw the world through my own eyes, not the eyes of my superiors and my vision was clear.
I knew my duty. I knew my job. I also knew deep down, regardless of the loyalty my commission required, my stance was in opposition and it was but a matter of time before they’d force me to stand alone.
Fortunately for me, my crew was loyal too and I had the full support of my closest friend and confidant as well. I didn’t know where I’d end up but I knew one thing for sure; I needed to get the hell out of England and thanks to them, I was taking my ship with me.
The time had come to hunt. ~ Gabriel Wallace

Cannon fire!

Sword Fights!

Pirates!

Royal Navy!

Treasure!

All of this and more await you when you come aboard the Majesty’s Venture! But don’t get too comfortable. The seas are rough and the men are rougher! Follow this amber haired captain as he sets off on an adventure with his loyal crew, seeking revenge!

“Although my original mission was set into motion based on my loyalty to the crown, my enemies had delivered my revenge right to my front door.”

Book Review

Reviewed by Sarah Stuart for Readers’ Favorite

Ivory Shepard, known as The Razor, narrates her own story in P.S. Bartlett’s Demons & Pearls (The Razor’s Adventures Book 1). It opens when the pirate ship, Demon Sea, attacks a merchant vessel. Not satisfied with taking her cargo, Captain Barclay commands that her crew be slaughtered. The Razor, who has travelled thus far accompanying her three female cousins with the promise of Barclay’s protection on the voyage to a new life in Jamaica, sees him for the unprincipled man he is and kills him. She is determined to settle her three young female cousins in Jamaica, and claim her own freedom to live as she pleases.

Chapter one opens with a battle at sea. With the captain dead by Ivory’s hand, another is elected. After much argument, the four girls arrive safely in Port Royal where the new captain, McCormack, offers them refuge in his own home, but is the offer as generous as it appears? His wife, Millie, an ex-whore, is not the lady she pretends to be and Ivory discovers that the fortress the captain calls home is a trap; a holding house for girls destined for sale.

Demons & Pearls is the story of Ivory Shepard, The Razor, who recounts the adventure. Demons and Pearls is an action-packed thriller where The Razor’s problems are compounded by sexual discrimination. To be a sailor, she must adopt the appearance of a man. When Captain Berman, Big Red, sees through her disguise, the sexual tension is stretched taut as a circus high wire. P.S. Bartlett has written a book that is impossible to put down. I recommend Demons & Pearls to anyone who enjoys a gripping, fast-paced story full of cliffhangers and surprises.

My #Interview With Fellow #Pirate Loving #Author Alonna Williams!

hoist the colors

Introduce yourself:

My name is Alonna Williams, I’m the author the Pirates of the Lost Cove series as well as The Last Borns series both to be released in 2016.
What made you want to become an author?
I personally feel like being an author isn’t much of a choice. I have a huge imagination that needs to be set free!
What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating worlds where good prevails and creating characters that can whisk you away from the dreads of our present reality. Also, it’s an amazing way to express any kinds of feelings
Did any books, movies or music etc inspire your writing?
I can’t really list the inspirations; music is usually the thing that gets me writing. Many different songs have been the reason behind my works
What is your favorite book and why?
Probably Alice in Wonderland; I’ve always been a curious girl and so I really relate to Alice sometimes
What are the scariest things about writing?
I think it’s really how people will react to it; I know that a lot of my characters have feelings related to mines and so I’m basically sharing my fears with the world
Any advice for aspiring authors?
Write what you love! And never write just for money.
Who is Trevor Henderson?
Trevor is a tricky work. He’s a spoiled teen with many unpleasant traits. My goal with Trevor is to make him grow into a more like able character as the series goes on. He’s different from most protagonist’s in a sense where he’s spoiled, unthankful, selfish, rude and many other bad things, but as you get to know him; you realize why he acts that way and what he’s really like
Tell everyone where to find you and your books:
Pirates of the Lost Cove books one and two will be available on the first of February on Amazon.com and many E-book platforms. I’m hoping to release The Last Borns in the Spring time.

#Fabulous Five Star Review for JADED TIDES! Come on! Climb #Aboard!

Five Stars Girl

I LOVE this review!

“Ready for another high adventure on the open seas where vast ships sail the waters filled with cargo, treasure and contraband? Welcome aboard as we set sail once again with the firebrand, Ivory, still in her disguise as Ivan. To her shock and awe, she finds love in the arms of the Jade’s captain. Rasmus knows what he is getting into with the fiery Ivory and he has vowed to fight by her side as she prepares to seek and destroy every slave ship she finds. Young females are being taken from their homes and sent across the waters in a lucrative pirate sex trade business fouling the waters of the Caribbean and Ivory is determined to stop it at any cost. But is she willing to risk Rasmus? Her identity? Her life?

P.S. Bartlett is back and she has another adventure-filled voyage to take us on. Jaded Tides is adventure, romance and history in the making as Ivory will stop at nothing to stop evil at its worst. With her own history to spur her on, sometimes Ivory acts before she thinks, but it’s her passion that brings this tale to life. She is a heroine to be reckoned with. And Rasmus? The man is a saint, honorable, brave and, let’s be honest; he loves the fire in Ivory’s heart, even when it could be at his expense.

With a rapid pace, entanglements all around and a crew that has salt in their veins and loyalty in their hearts, the humorous scenes just add to the joy of Ivory’s adventures. More fun than the Loveboat, more romantic than a seaside picnic, even the smells of the crew, the water and the bowels of a ship wouldn’t make me miss taking this voyage! So hoist the sails, get your sea legs ready, we’re off on another adventure with P.S. Bartlett at the helm.”
