Amber Wake: Gabriel Falling by P.S. Bartlett and Ronovan Hester

Where do I begin?
That’s a difficult question in and of itself but when your life is transformed into something else, do you start when you’re born or when your life truly began?
I was born in London as Gabriel Wallace. The child of high society; although I was raised to appreciate
everything that softly landed in my hand. I followed all the rules. I worked hard, studied hard and ended up a captain in the Royal Navy before my twenty fifth birthday. Unfortunately, I saw the world through my own eyes, not the eyes of my superiors and my vision was clear.
I knew my duty. I knew my job. I also knew deep down, regardless of the loyalty my commission required, my stance was in opposition and it was but a matter of time before they’d force me to stand alone.
Fortunately for me, my crew was loyal too and I had the full support of my closest friend and confidant as well. I didn’t know where I’d end up but I knew one thing for sure; I needed to get the hell out of England and thanks to them, I was taking my ship with me.
The time had come to hunt. ~ Gabriel Wallace

Leaving the poll up a few more days! You can vote more than once so please do.

If you know anything about pirates, one of the most important matters aboard a ship is that all crew members get a vote on everything relating to ship business. I’d like to apply the same principles here for the naming of my newest pirate ship. She’s captained by a fearless and ruthless pirate, who goes by the name of Black Eye Woodley, in my forthcoming novel, Jaded Tides. However, this fine upstanding gentleman and his equally as ruthless cast of colorful characters aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. They’ll definitely be sailing straight through into my next installment in the Razor’s Adventure Series, so keep a weathered eye on the horizon mates!

I’ve chosen my favorite suggestions from all of the posts here on my blog, as well as from those on my Facebook Page – The Razor’s Adventures Pirate Tales. I’d really appreciate it if you could drop by my page sometime and give it a like and by all means, say hello and share your own work!

Here’s an excerpt from where we first meet Black Eye Woodley to maybe help ye scallywags leave yer mark:

I could hear the hoof beats now. They slowed as they approached the house and Rasmus opened the door and stepped out onto the front porch. As they came to a halt, I heard the raspy and boisterous voice of a man shout, “Avast mates! It be Big Red Bergman ‘imself!”

The hot breath of the field hands blew against the back of my neck as I leaned forward in the dark, watching from the window. I turned quietly to them and said, “Those of you with guns, move to the windows and set your eyes on that finely dressed one who is addressing Captain Bergman. I can assure you, that man is the leader and obviously a captain as well.” They all did as I advised as I too readied myself to fire when necessary upon the big, blond fancy man, who was now dismounting his horse.

The faces of the men surrounding him glowed orange in the torchlight. One by one they too dismounted and stood aside their steed with their hands resting on their weapon of choice. They were dirty and varied greatly in appearance. Their faces were frightening and most were scarred or poorly tattooed. I’d never seen such a cast of characters. It was impossible to take my eyes off of them as each man was more interesting looking than the next, albeit in a twisted and bizarre way.

These were pirates alright and once I’d adjusted to their menacing presence, I counted eighteen of them. What ship could spare that many crewmen, just to go after one lousy murdering pirate? I hushed my inquiring thoughts so that I could overhear every word exchanged between Rasmus and the bejeweled man in the long emerald coat.

“Captain Bergman,” the man said, sweeping his enormous tricorn hat from his head, brushing it through the air and across his body with a bow.

“Black Eye Woodley. What brings you to Nassau, not to mention out here at this hour? The fruit harvest isn’t for at least another month,” Rasmus joked. Removing his cavalier and bowing as well.

“Oh, I’m certain ye know exactly what brings us out here on this shitty evening. The hour is of no importance when there’s a dead inn keeper at the Windy. We have it on the word of a little bonny, dark eyed lass, that the killer is one of your crew.” The man Rasmus had called Black Eye Woodley, stepped towards the front porch and rested his shiny gold buckled boot upon the bottom step.

“That’s far enough, Woodley. Who sent ye here? Ye ain’t the law so ye have no business claiming anybody, killer or not,” Rasmus said.

“On the contrary, Red, the Governor ‘imself often calls on gentlemen such as ourselves to lend a hand in situations such as these. There’s pirates everywhere in Nassau ye know, brother, and I happen to have a great interest in keeping the peace here.”

“Since when?”

“Since he pays in gold for my services. He doesn’t much care for the sight of blood. Hasn’t got the stomach for it.”

“Ye can’t have him. He’s just a kid and that inn keeper pulled a pistol on him. It was self-defense.”

“Him?” Woodley said of over a laugh. “Why, ye must think me an utter fool, Red. Now, ye haven’t been at sea so long ye can’t distinguish a woman from a man have ye?”

“What are ye talking about?” I trembled at Rasmus’ tone. I could feel the fear coursing through his veins from where I stood but I didn’t dare move a muscle, lest I ruin whatever plans he was making in his head and I knew damn well he was plotting something.

Now, make yer mark! I need to finish me book!

Uncharted Secrets – My Chat With Mason Bentley and My Review

Endless Horizons

Mason Bentley as Hannah describes him: His stunning green eyes, which stood out like emeralds in the sand against his golden skin.

Mason in his own words:

1. What is your name?

The Name’s Mason Bentley.

2. What is your hair color and style, eye color, and skin tone?

My long hair is a light brown color, my skins golden tan, but I got these green eyes that make the wenches fall faint beneath my gaze.

3. What is your current job title / social station / rank?

I’m a buccaneer captain. Not a pirate. Not a privateer. A buccaneer. The war we wage is strictly against the Spanish, but I bow to no king and any man from any race who tries to take me freedom won’t be living to tell the tale.

4. How much pride do you take in your appearance?

Ah, I never had much while growin’ up, but me grandfather used to say, “If’n ye ‘ave but one schilling it ought to be shiny and if’n but one coat ye better keep it clean.” Now I’m rich as a damned king so I dress as well as one, but I’m better armed than a knight of the roundtable.

5. Who has been your greatest influence (parent, friend, idol)? Why?

My grandfather, Sterling Bentley. He taught me how to stand up for what’s right, to fight for what I believe in, and to protect those unable to protect themselves. I owe him for every bit of sense I carry around in this big ol’ head of mine, and I wouldn’t have fared so well in this wicked world after his passing had he not raised me to be the man I am.

6. Where did you grow up? How do you feel about it now?

I grew up on me grandfather’s farm in the English countryside. It was nice. Hell, I still think about the breeze blowing across those grassy fields when me mind needs a moments rest.

7. What is your worst habit / vice?

Women. I could lead me crew of bawdy buccaneers through the gates of Hell if’n I had to, but those pretty little female creatures tend to throw me good sense out of the porthole and hang me better judgment from the yards.

8. What is the driving force / motivation in your life?

First and foremost, it is freedom, which unfortunately seems an item that can be bought, and Spanish gold is my preferred method of currency to cover the cost.

9. What secret would you feel the most vulnerable sharing with anyone?

The reason I turned to the sea.

10. Does anyone know this secret?

If so, who? How do they feel about it? Only me and the Devil know that, and how he feels about it is of no concern of mine.

My Review of Uncharted Secrets:

FIVE STARS!

I’ve just finished reading this book. I started it last night but I was exhausted and fell asleep with it on my chest. That’s exactly where it belongs…close to my heart! I couldn’t wait to get back to it this evening and once I did, i knew I couldn’t stop until I was done!

Hannah was dealt a horrible hand. After finally escaping her miserable mother, a horrid night at sea threw her even deeper into a hellish nightmare that pushed her to the brink of death until she found herself in the midst of an even more uncertain future. Concerned only with survival and coping with more pain and loss than she could have dreamt in her worst nightmare, her instincts were to fight or flee.

Love wasn’t an option but in once again finding herself and making that discovery through what she believed the most unlikely source…one she wanted to dispise, a sea of change and a Sunrise of unlikely colors may just paint her future for her. When she learns to embrace her gifts, only then can she see past the horizon and stop denying her true nature and her true heart.

As an author myself, I appreciate and dare I say fall in love with stories that are not only well written but get into my head and my heart. This author and this story have captured me but I am a willing prisoner. I was lost in this story and the emotion, the scenery and the almost flesh and bone characters felt so real to me. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Now…to make time for the next book…and believe me when I tell you I will make the time!!!

The #Pirate Code – Can You Follow the Rules of the #Ship?

A Pirate’s code of conduct

Contrary to popular images of pirates, life aboard ship was often a model of discipline and democracy. The following code of conduct was taken from one 18th century pirate ship and offers interesting insight into pirate affairs.

1. Every man shall obey civil Command; the Captain shall have one full share and a half in all Prizes; the Master, Carpenter, Boatswain and Gunner shall have one Share and quarter.

2. If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any Secret from the Company, he shall be marroon’d with one Bottle of Powder, one Bottle of Water, one small Arm and shot.

3. If any Many shall steel any Thing in the Company, or game, to the Value of a Piece of Eight, he shall be marroon’d or shot.

4. If at any Time we should meet another Marrooner (that is Pyrate) that Man that shall sign his Articles without the Consent of our Company, shall suffer such Punishment as the Captain and Company shall think fit.

5. That Man that shall strike another whilst these Articles are in force, shall receive Mose’s Law (that is 40 stripes lacking one) on the bare Back.

6. That Man that shall snap his Arms, or smoak Tobacco in the Hold, without a cap to his Pipe, or carry a Candle lighted without a Lanthorn, shall suffer the same Punishment as in the former Article.

Tim Rickard / News & Record

7. That Man that shall not keep his Arms clean, fit for an Engagement, or neglect his Business, shall be cut off from his Share, and suffer such other Punishment as the Captain and the Company shall think fit.

8. If any Man shall lose a Joint in time of an Engagement he shall have 400 pieces of Eight; if a limb 800.

9. If at any time you meet with a prudent Woman, that Man that offers to meddle with her, without her Consent, shall suffer present Death.
